Its self-reliant nature and simple design have allowed it not only to persist, but to become cemented as a symbol of the counterculture movement of the ’60s as well as part of the camping pantheon. These German vans have become as much a symbol as they are a vehicle, representing seemingly endless possibilities. And that legacy endures to this your humble scribe spent three days in Canada driving the new Volkswagen camper van, the California Ocean, around the southern half of Nova Scotia, covering over 400 miles of pine-lined rustic shores and sprawling interior farmlands. Although VW sent us to this Canadian coastal province to drive a van named after the state son closely identified with boxy Vee-Dubs, neither Canadians nor Californians can have one; it’s not sold in North America. Buy NowWhat We LikeThe updated looks of the 2020 California Ocean — a new front bumper and an enlarged grill for added airflow to the engine — don’t seem overly striking at first; indeed, it somehow looks both very large and compact all at the same time. But the two-tone white on copper finish that our vans had gave the VWs a retro look that simultaneously managed to be modern and appeal was clear: whenever we stopped, someone would pull up alongside the van and ask a flurry of questions — and inevitably walk away sad when they heard they couldn’t have one. It’s no Italian sports car, but the mix of strange beauty and German practicality here is hard to the the California has been loaded with even more comfort- and efficiency-minded gadgets. The interior feels truly massive — at least by New York City apartment standards. The California also has (deep breath) a two-burner propane stovetop, refrigerator, sink, cold-water shower, on-board water and propane tanks, twin removable tables and chairs, an awning, a diesel-powered heater and more Batmobile-esque gadgets that would take years of ownership to spite of all those features, the interior feels well-thought-out. A few new touches include aluminum handles for the interior cabinetry, wood trim and flooring, new push-to-release mechanisms for some of the kitchen appliances and updated upholstery. Though some of these details may feel small on their own, they add up to a vehicle that feels much more like a home than a van ought course, there are still some classic features it shares with some of the camper vans of yore. The California is still fitted with that iconic feature, the pop-top roof bed that sleeps an additional two people. Unlike the Microbuses and Westfalias of the past, these new iterations aren’t a canvas tent with a sliding piece of wood for a bed. The has a new bed design with a built-in box spring and queen-size mattress surrounded by a sturdy, almost white-water-raft like material, and it can be deployed in less than two minutes with the push of a button. The van also has a digital pitch gauge allowing the driver to find a level spot setting up you decide, like I did, to forgo the new alarm clock feature (in which the cabin lights gently fade on at whatever time you choose), the pop-up tent has zip-open flaps on all four walls to allow the sunrise to wake you. It’s also great for letting in some fresh air if the diesel heater has been cooking a little too hard through the is a new display at the helm, which acts as the pilot’s right-hand man. You really do have to keep its limitations in mind, because it is working hard to hide them from bigger issue though: it’s really expensive. Although there is a lot of value here, the price tag can be shocking: up to $99,000 for the fully-loaded Ocean package I tested. The differences between a base model and a fully-optioned one aren’t that extreme, essentially coming down to a flip-out kitchen instead of a fixed one and a handful of aesthetic items. The optioned-out model was a blast to spend a weekend in, but if these were available Stateside, I’d grab the simple, no-frills version and save tens of thousands of dollars while still having largely the same experience. VerdictEven though it’s too expensive for me, the new VW California Ocean has made me even more jealous of our European friends’ ability to spend the weekend in one of the excellent new iterations of VW’s long line of adventure machines. Beide gibt es inzwischen in abgespeckten Versionen für mehr Alltagsnutzen. Die mögliche Liegefläche wird schmaler. Ihre Camping-Eignung ergibt sich aus dem Aufstelldach mit Bett. Und aus Sitzbänken, die sich zur Bettlandschaft umbauen lassen. Der VW ist mit gut 4,90 Metern etwas kürzer als der Mercedes mit 5,14 Metern. Für manche Fähren ein Faktor in puncto Ticket-Preis. Meist liegt die für einen höheren Tarif relevante Längenbegrenzung aber Prinzip ist bei beiden gleich: Mit eingeklapptem Dach bleibt die Höhe unter zwei Metern (Marco Polo: 1,98 m, California: 1,99 m), was die Zufahrt in fast alle Parkhäuser erlaubt. Hier ist das Bett mit 2,05 Metern eine Spur länger, dafür schmaler. 1,13 Meter gibt Mercedes an, es geht also sehr kuschelig der unteren Etage lassen sich in beiden Campern je nach Sitzkonfiguration fünf bis sieben Personen transportieren. Dazu sind zwei Schlafplätze möglich. Das Bett ist breiter als unter dem Dach, eine Schlafauflage lassen sich VW und Mercedes extra bezahlen. Die Vordersitze können sich serienmäßig drehen. Mercedes bietet für knapp 600 Euro einen klappbaren Tisch an, der sich im Innenraum verschieben lässt. Bei VW ist ein Campingtisch für innen und außen Serie. Er versteckt sich in der für die CampingreiseVolkswagen baut ausschließlich 2,0-Liter-Diesel in den California. Sie leisten 110 PS, 150 PS und 199 PS. In Kombination mit den Schiffsdiehlen als Bodenbelag und der indirekten Beleuchtung geht das schon fast Richtung Glamping. Wir sind zwei Erwachse nicht besonders groß (unter 180 cm;), mit unseren zwei Kindern aktuell 8 und 9 Jahre alt und unserem Hund Lenny. Wir haben nur ein Auto und leben stadtnah und besuchen auch gern im Urlaub Städte, so dass ein Tiefgaragen taugliches Fahrzeug fast ein muss für uns ist. Was spricht für ein fahrendes Hotel VW California Ganz einfach – der Komfort. Das haben wir in unseren California zumindest sehr geschätzt. Denn die gut 30 cm breiten Küchenzeile ist eigentlich auch der größte Unterschied zwischen den California Modellen. Dieser Einbau ermöglicht das Abwaschen in einem kleinen Spülbecken, das 2-flammige Kochen auf einem Gasherd und beherbergt den 42 Liter großen Kompressor Kühlschrank. Entspannt zu zweit kochen und den Abend genießen. Der weitere Platz von dem Möbel wird noch für die zweite Batterie, den Frisch- und Abwassertank und die Gasversorgung geschickt genutzt. Alles was jetzt noch übrig bleibt, ist Stauraum. Damit kann man schon was Anfang, auch als 4-köpfige Familie mit Hund. Blick in den Kompressor Kühlschrank vom Hotel California. Der California Coast und Ocean warten aber noch mit zusätzlichem Stauraum auf. Denn die zweier Sitzbank zum Umklappen hat eine riesige Schublade, die für den gesamten Proviant verwendet werden kann. Echt genial, auch wenn dadurch keine größeren Gegenstände wie Snowboards durchgeladen werden können. Im hinteren oberen Bereich befindet sich ein weiterer Stauraum, der meistens für die gesamten Klamotten unserer Kinder (in den Sommerurlauben) ausreichen musste. Ein zusätzlicher kleiner Tisch kann zudem noch neben der Sitzbank vorgeschoben und ausgeklappt werden. Wobei der von der Größe zu viert schon recht klein ist, aber für ein Frühstück mit Müsli und Kaffee noch funktioniert. Für ein gemütliches Frühstück zu viert ist der Tisch einfach zu klein. Hinten sind noch die zusätzlichen Fächer für den Stauraum zu sehen. Beim California Ocean ist das Aufstelldach zudem noch elektrisch. Die Gefahr, dass die irgendwann nicht mehr schließt ist natürlich immer da, aber das Dach kann wohl auch manuell geschlossen werden. Nach 8 Jahren mussten wir zudem die Hydraulikpumpe für mehrere hundert Euro tauschen lassen. Durch die Ausstattung kann ohne großes beladen sofort in den Urlaub oder in das Wochenende gestartet werden und alles ist dabei – das nenne ich Freiheit. Die Modelle sind aus unserer Sicht nicht flexibel genug. Standardmäßig können nur 4 Personen mitfahren. Die Küchenzeile nimmt jedoch auch bei Transporten wie Umzügen einfach zu viel Platz weg. Die Rücksitzbank ist so schwer, dass Sie praktisch nicht alleine ausgebaut werden kann (bei Einzelsitzen verhält es sich ähnlich). Wir sind im Schnitt wahrscheinlich 2 Monate im Jahr Campen, das sind gerade mal 16,6 %. Im Alltag wird der Bus jedoch täglich, also 83,3 % der Zeit genutzt. Für uns sind im Alltag immer mal wieder 6 Sitze sinnvoll, um auch mal ein paar Freunde oder die Eltern mitnehmen zu können, wenn man schon einen Bus hat sollte das doch das mindeste sein, oder? Dann haben wir auch noch das Thema Preis. Ja die Modelle sind alle sehr teuer und unterscheiden sich auch nur geringfügig von dem Mercedes Marco Polo. Aber für eine unflexible Lösung auch noch bis Euro mehr bezahlen, ist aus unserer Sicht keine Option. An dieser Stelle spielen natürlich die ganzen individual Ausbauer wie Custom Bus oder Spacecamper & Co. ihre Stärken aus. Sie bieten Konzepte die beides in einem vereinen und sehr flexibel sind. Um an dieser Stelle mal exemplarisch einen Punkt zu nennen: Die Rücksitzbank vom Spacecamper: Sie kann alleine in wenigen Minuten ausgebaut werden. Sie hat ein große Schublade mit jeder menge Stauraum, welche auch ausgebaut werden kann, um lange Gegenstände durchzuladen. Perfekt! Was spricht für den California Beach Der California Beach ist eigentlich ein Multivan mit einer soliden Camping Ausstattung. Der Beach kommt mit dem Schienensystem daher, über welches die Sitzbank flexibel verschoben werden kann und bis zu 2 weitere Einzelsitze zu der 3-Sitzbank ergänzt werden können. So entsteht 7 vollwertige Sitze mit Armlehnen und 3-Punkt Gurt. Die Sitzbank kann umgeklappt werden und zusammen mit dem Multiflexboard ensteht ein großzügiges Bett. Durch die sportliche Kontur der Sitzbank ist eine zusätzliche Matratze als Auflage zu empfehlen. Einziger Nachteil bei dem bett ist die Höhe in Schlafposition. Denn diese ist ein gutes Stück höher wie im Coast und Ocean, so dass bei aufrechtem Sitzen auf dem Bett unser Kopf am Himmel anstößt. Die Verdunkelung der Seitenfenster sehen beim Mercedes Horizon aus wie in einem Leichenwagen. Hier muss aus meiner Sicht noch mal nachgebessert werden. Fazit California Beach gegen Coast & Ocean Wer den Bus im Alltag nutzt und mehr wie 2 Kinder hat, wird den Beach lieben. Allerdings fehlt natürlich noch ein bisschen Zubehör, damit der Camping Urlaub auch wirklich perfekt wird. Smart dashboard with high-quality controlsLots of storage space and cubbiesHigh driving position, solid build quality The California is blessed with great forward visibility thanks to the high seating position – it’s high for a van, let alone a car or SUV – and all of the secondary controls are sensibly laid out and clearly labelled, regardless of whether you’re in a pre- or post-facelift model. There is also a vast amount of useful storage within an arm’s reach of the driver, from the double-decker door bins to a variety of cup and bottle holders. The updated dashboard in the takes this even further, despite having an even smarter and car-like appearance. Either way, you’re more likely to have trouble remembering where you put something than struggle to find somewhere to put it in the first place. Interior upgrades for the 2019-onwards California facelift As well as changing the UK trim line up to Coast and Ocean for 2019 (ditching the more basic Beach until late 2020, when it was reintroduced) Volkswagen has made a number of detail improvements to the California’s interior. The one you certainly won’t miss is the new dashboard, which looks much sharper with its newly integrated infotainment screens running VW’s MIB3 software and complete with voice control, on-board Wi-Fi and other connectivity features. Losing the physical volume knob for the stereo seems a bit of a shame, though. Ocean models get a fancy second screen called the Digital Cockpit in place of a conventional instrument cluster. And although this is a touch harder on the eyes, the customisable manner in which you can display information here and on the central touchscreen means you’ll find everything you could want to know available at glance. Speaking of screens, on top models you’ll quickly notice that there’s now another one lurking above the rear-view mirror. This controls all the camping functions, including the pop-up roof, the auxiliary heating, the lighting and the fridge. It also has a set of digital levels to help you park the California as level as possible and stop things rolling across the cabin. The high-set gearlever even makes gearchanges a relaxing affair, while the clarity of the instrumentation gives you easy access to all the most important information. This extends to the touchscreen infotainment systems, which are straightforward to use on all versions. Refinement We generally use this section of a Parkers review to talk about noise, vibration and harshness – NVH as automotive engineers like to put it – but in the VW California you will experience this in a different way to almost any other vehicle on sale. Which is to say the most distracting thing about driving it is the sound of all the pots and pans and other cooking paraphernalia rattling around in the back… This aside, there’s a bit of engine noise when accelerating hard – reduced in facelift models but entirely acceptable at any rate – but wind noise is well suppressed. Unseemly vibrations aren’t really an issue; VW’s latest diesels are smooth, and for a big hollow structure, the California is impressively stiff. Comfy seats up front, loads of legroom in the back The front seats are comfortable and highly adjustable (they even swivel round to create a lounge-like interior when you’re parked); the standard rear bench – which converts into a bed remember – isn’t quite as comfy on the posterior, but you do get loads of legroom. As for ride comfort, the California is a touch bumpier than a conventional car over rougher surfaces, but it generally delivers a relaxed, unfussy experience that once again ensures you should arrive at your destination ready to enjoy your camping holiday – or at least a good night’s kip.

Compare specifications and it actually compares well with its rivals on price. You get an added bonus, too: it won’t lose as much of its value over time as other ’vans would. It may be the world’s second largest carmaker, but Volkswagen still takes a keen interest in the campervan market. The California is the only campervan that’s completely manufactured by Volkswagen: the rest are made by specialist manufacturers of varying degrees of pedigree. Now we have the T6, the latest-generation Volkswagen Transporter, on which the VW California Ocean you see here is based. It may not look that different from the T5 that it’s replaced, but it’s meant a choice of cleaner, more fuel-efficient Euro 6 engines, all manner of safety enhancements and more. Indeed, Volkswagen lists some 6000 changes to the T6 over the T5. Some of the most significant in terms of safety include a Driver Alert System, Brake Assist, an Automotive Post-Collision Braking System and so on. In short, it’s the best VW Transporter to date: it’s more powerful, more economical, quieter, better equipped, sturdier and safer. Yes, it’s more expensive. But the overall dimensions remain exactly the same as those of the T5. In T6 guise, there are two flavours: Beach and Ocean. Here we have the latter and the higher-trim Ocean is a standard-bearer for the entire class of T6-based ’vans, and a great indicator of the characteristics you can expect when a carmaker turns its attention to campervan production. The furniture and mouldings are of superior quality. Volkswagen also retains the premium dashboard for its own product. Integral blinds for the side and rear windows, all-LED rear lights, twin chrome strips on the front grille (rivals just get the single ones) and other details are reminders that the Ocean is a cut above the rest of the fleet. It is by no means perfect, though. Practicality may not always have been at the forefront of its designers’ thoughts. The gas cylinder surrounded by the fresh water tank isn’t liked by everyone. And while overall storage is decent, it lacks the imaginative ideas that other converters can offer. Moreover, despite being able to call upon lots of optional extras, the majority of these focus on the base vehicle rather than enhancing the camping side of things. The conversion isn’t switched to right-hand drive, either; hence, the sliding door is on our offside (we appreciate its power latch, but that doesn’t compensate). The small, top-loading fridge is definitely a love-it/loathe-it item. In addition, interior lighting is acceptable, rather than generous. Nevertheless, the majority would agree that here is a campervan that is head-and-shoulders above its contemporaries. It needn’t cost more, either. Spec-for-spec comparisons actually favour the California – especially because the standard equipment includes clever features, for example, the electrically operated aluminium elevating roof, an outdoor table that is stowed in the sliding door, folding lounge chairs in the tailgate and a programmable diesel heating system. It’s a full four-berth from the start, too, and the better bed is the one in the roof. The rear seat is automotive quality and boasts fold-away head restraints. There’s an option to add a fifth, removable, travel seat, too. Volkswagen only offers the California Ocean with two choices of engine – the 150PS and 204PS – albeit along with a range of DSG automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel driving configurations.
